A gender changer is a compact inline DB9 adapter that changes the physical sex of a connector — male to female or female to male — while passing all 9 signal pins straight-through with no modification to signal routing. Gender changers are used when two cables or device ports physically cannot mate because both terminate in the same connector gender.
A null modem adapter functions identically to a null modem cable but in a compact, inline form factor. It crosses the Tx and Rx signal lines (along with associated handshaking) between its two connectors. Inserted at the end of a straight-through cable or between two cables, it produces the same signal crossover as a full null modem cable.
