The RS-232 Remote

The RS-232 Remote Transmitter is a highly configurable transmitter that enables true wireless interfacing with native RS-232 devices. RS-232 devices typically output data via a DB9. RS-232 signals can commonly span ±15v. The RS-232 Transmitter has an architecture that allows it to communicate in this native voltage range and transmit the data on the MobileCollect.

Before the RS-232 Remote can transmit measurement data, it must be paired with a MobileCollect Base Receiver and configured with the correct serial communication parameters, including baud rate, parity, and EOP (End-of-Packet) character, for the connected RS-232 instrument. This guide walks through that initial setup: referencing the target Base, configuring Remote communication parameters (including Automatic Baud Rate Detection), and pairing the Remote to a channel on the Base Setup & Pairing tab.

The RS-232 Remote can be set up to interface with a wide range of RS-232 gages and devices. By utilizing the Mobile Collect Setup Programs, one can define comm parameters, program serial commands to the read switch port, and perform basic data parsing.

All RS-232 Remote setup needs to be completed with MobileCollect Extended Setup.

RS-232 Remote Pairing and Initial Setup - Base Reference

  1. Open MobileCollect Extended Setup software and ensure that it is “Base” mode. Connect the Base to the PC via USB.
  2. Find the desired Base Receiver.
  3. Note the Base ID in the Info Window. This will be used in later steps to pair the Remote to the Base.
  4. After noting the Base ID, disconnect the Base from the program.

RS-232 Remote Pairing and Initial Setup – Remote Setup

  1. Next, ensure the RS-232 Remote is connected to the PC via USB. Change the Setup program to look for Remotes.
  2. Find the Remote.
  3. Note the Remote ID.
  4. If the Remote has been paired to a Base Receiver already, info about the Base will be displayed in the “Target Base:” area. This will be blank if the Remote has not been paired.
  5. Select the correct Communication Parameters for the RS-232 device the Remote will be connected to.
  6. If Auto Baud detection is selected, the RS-232 Remote can automatically select the Comm Parameters for you. To run Auto Baud mode, reset the Remote, when all 6 LEDS remain illuminated after startup, press the print button on the RS-232 Device. If succesful, the lower right green LED will blink 5 times. Refer to the Hardware User Manual, section 4.3.1, for more information.
  7. Navigate to the “RS-232 Remote Setup Tab”
  8. Ensure the correct EOP Character or option is selected. The correct EOP can be determined from the RS-232 device’s user manual
  9. Click “Get Base” to resume the pairing process.
  10. The “Pair Remote with Base” window will appear. This window lists all the Base Receivers that have been connected to a setup program on the PC. Select the Base Receiver with the ID as noted in step 3.
  11. With the target Base highlighted, press “Select” to finalize the selection.
  12. The target Base ID can now be seen in the “Target Base Unit” area
  13. The Base selection needs to be sent to the RS-232 Remote to load the info onto the Remote. Send all updates made in the setup program to the Remote by pressing the “Send Setup” Button.
  14. Disconnect the Remote from the Setup Program.

RS-232 Remote Pairing and Initial Setup – Base Setup

  1. Return to the Home Tab
  2. Change the Setup program to look for Bases.
  3. Find the Base.
  4. Navigate to the “Base Setup & Pairing” Tab
  5. Select the “Module Type & Pairing” cell in desired channel to pair the Remote to. Once highlighted, type “r” on the keyboard to indicate and RS-232 Remote. Note the instructions in the bottom of the window if you get stuck.
  6. Right Mouse Button (RMB) Click on the “Module ID” Cell in the same channel.
  7. The “RS-232 Remote ID Selection” Window will appear. This window lists all the Remotes that have been connected to a setup program on the PC. Select the remove with the ID as noted in step 7.
  8. With the target Remote highlighted, press “Select” to finalize the selection.
  9. The Remote can now be seen in the selected channel’s Module ID Cell.
  10. Make any custom output formats as desired
  11. Send the updates to the Base Receiver to finalize Base setup.
  12. The RS-232 Remote has been Paired with Base Receiver. This pairing will remain between the RS-232 Remote and Base until it is changed in the setup program, either unit is factory reset, or a firmware update occurs. MobileCollect pairing remains through power cycles and long periods of dormancy.

Conclusion

Once the RS-232 Remote has been paired to a Base Receiver and its communication parameters are set to match the connected instrument, the pairing is durable: it remains in place between power cycles and long periods of dormancy, and persists until it is changed in the setup program, either unit is factory reset, or a firmware update occurs. No further software interaction is required for day-to-day operation.

If the connected RS-232 device outputs data continuously, sends multi-field packets that require parsing, or needs a serial command or handshake line to trigger a reading, refer to the MobileCollect Hardware Components Users Guide.
