The 54-115-444 Power & Data RS-232 cable connects the serial output port of compatible Fowler/Bowers and Sylvac instruments to a data collection host — eliminating manual transcription of measurement readings and enabling direct output to SPC software, inspection databases, or any application that accepts RS-232 serial data.
The gage-side connector mates with the Power & Data port on the instrument. The host side terminates in a DB9 female connector, compatible with WedgeLink keyboard wedges, MobileCollect RS-232 Remote wireless transmitters, and GageWay Pro wired interfaces.
This cable supplies power to the gage through the connection — the gage’s battery must be removed before use. When the host interface is active, power flows to the gage through the cable. When the host interface is powered off or disconnected, power is removed from the gage. Ensure the host interface remains powered for the duration of your measurement session.
The 54-115-444 Power & Data connector is used on the following instruments:
Not sure if this is the correct cable for your gage? Use the MobileCollect Selection Tool to look up your specific model, or contact sales@microridge.com.
Before connecting the cable, verify the gage’s RS-232 communication parameters match your receiving interface. WedgeLink and GageWay Pro both support auto baud rate detection, which simplifies initial setup. For specific RS-232 settings on your instrument, refer to the manufacturer’s documentation.
Refer to your WedgeLink or GageWay Pro documentation for host-side comm parameter configuration.
WedgeLink AT / WedgeLink SP — WedgeLink keyboard wedge technology translates the RS-232 serial output into keystrokes, sending measurement readings directly into Excel, SPC software, or any application that accepts keyboard input — no software integration required. Auto baud rate detection simplifies setup; data parsing handles the native instrument output format.
MobileCollect RS-232 Remote — For wireless data collection without cable runs between the gage and the collection point, the RS-232 Remote pairs with this cable to transmit measurement readings wirelessly over MobileCollect’s RM2.4 proprietary protocol. 133-foot wireless range, encrypted, and resilient to RF noise common in industrial inspection environments.
GageWay Pro — Connects to the GageWay Pro via the multifunction serial port or the front gage channels (Level Converter Cable GW-LC required for front channels). The GageWay Pro provides USB serial and USB keyboard wedge output alongside its DB9 port, with configurable read modes (single, continuous, TIR) and data parsing for complex instrument output strings.
MicroRidge offers the 54-115-444 cable/connector for other systems in the MobileCollect product family:
RS-232 V2 Connector — Power & Data Gage Cable — If you need to take your gage wireless without a cable run to a host PC, this is the connector you need. It pairs with the RS-232 V2 Mobile Module (MC-MM-V2) transmitter, integrating directly into the MobileCollect wireless network. The V2 connector attaches at the gage’s Power & Data port and the transmitter clips on — no separate cable to the host. Note: the same battery removal requirement applies when using the V2 connector. Use the cable on this page for wired connections; use the V2 connector for mobility.
Q: Does this cable work with both Fowler/Bowers and Sylvac instruments?
— Yes. The 54-115-444 Power & Data cable is compatible with Fowler/Bowers Pistol Grips, Fowler/Bowers Electronic Holemikes, Sylvac Quadra Test Electronic Indicators, and Sylvac Mini Resistant Electronic Indicators. Use the MobileCollect Selection Tool to confirm compatibility for your specific model.
Q: Why does the battery need to be removed?
— The 54-115-444 cable connects through the gage’s battery compartment — the same location where the battery is installed. The battery must be removed to make room for the cable. Power is then supplied to the gage through the cable connection for the duration of your measurement session.
Q: What software can I send measurement data to with this cable?
— Any software application that accepts keyboard input or USB serial data — including SPC programs, Excel, custom inspection databases, and MES systems. On its own, this cable provides RS-232 serial communication via DB9 only. A MicroRidge interface (WedgeLink, GageWay Pro, or MobileCollect RS-232 Remote) is required to convert that signal to USB serial or keystrokes for input to any application on the host.
Q: Do I need to configure baud rate settings on my gage?
— The gage’s RS-232 comm parameters must match the receiving interface. WedgeLink and GageWay Pro both support auto baud rate detection, which simplifies initial setup. Refer to your gage manufacturer’s documentation for how to access RS-232 settings on your specific instrument.
Q: What if I need a wireless solution instead of a wired cable?
—The RS-232 V2 Connector — Power & Data Gage Cable pairs with the RS-232 V2 Mobile Module to transmit measurement data wirelessly to any MobileCollect Base receiver. 133-foot range, RM2.4 encrypted protocol, no cable to the host PC required. Note that the battery removal requirement still applies when using the V2 connector.
